*The Parks ad Recreation Department is seeking instuctors to teach classes in our facilities. We would like to be able to offer several craft classes for the holidays as well as classes year round. The City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department has moved its Administrative Offices to 446 Pennsylvania Avenue. We are looking forward to serving you in our new facility.
Santa's Mailbag 2008
The City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department will be offering the “Santa’s Mailbag” program once again this year! The program will begin on November 17th and will run until December 15th. All letters must be turned into or mailed to the Recreation Department on 446 Pennsylvania Avenue, Greer, SC 29650 no later than 5:00 pm on Monday, December 15th. Letters will need to be accompanied by a stamp and a return address in order for the personalized Santa letter to be mailed to your child. The Recreation Department staff will read each letter and respond to each individually. They will be mailed and should reach your child by Christmas! The program is free to participate and is for all ages! Merry Christmas to all and HO,HO,HO!
Deadline for letters is December 15th, 2008

MLK Art & Literature Contest
The City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department will be offering an art and literature contest as part of our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The contest will be broken down into two separate contest, one being art and the other being literature. Winners will be judged in three categories: Elementary, Middle and High School. There will be two winners selected from each category in both art and literature. The contest is entitled “I Share the Dream” and asks what Dr. Martin Luther King means to you? Submissions will be judged by four local judges and winners will be presented their awards and framed pieces on January 19, 2008 at the MLK Celebration Luncheon. Submissions will need follow the proper criteria listed below:
Literature:
*Contestants may write a poem or short 1-2 page essay on what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. means to them? The essays must be matted and turned into the Recreation Department’s Operations Center on 446 Pennsylvania Avenue by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, December 12th. Make sure that the contestant’s entry form is completed and placed on the back of the matted work.
Art:
*Contestants may create a piece of art that depicts what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. means to them? The art must be matted and turned into the Recreation Department’s Operations Center on 446 Pennsylvania Avenue by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, December 12th. Make sure that the contestant’s entry form is completed and placed on the back of the matted work. Any artistic medium is welcomed such as pencil, paint, pastels, ect. No computer generated work will be excepted.
Deadline for submissions is December 12th, 2008

"Once Upon a Story......."
The City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a judged literature contest beginning October 6th, 2008 and will conclude on November 7th, 2008. Deadline for entries will be no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, November 21st, 2008. The contest will be open to youth grades 3rd - 12th and the criteria are as follows;
Grades 3rd - 5th:
Story should be a maximum of ten pages with illustrations/minimum of five pages
Stories can either be hand written or typed (14 point font)
Stories should be turned in with the entry sheet for judging
Grades 6th - 8th:
Story should be a maximum of thirty pages/minimum of fifteen pages (illustrations optional)
Stories can either be hand written or typed (14 point font)
Stories should be bound or displayed in presentation binder/folder
Stories should be turned in with entry sheet for judging
Grades 9th - 12th:
Story should be a maximum of eighty pages/minimum of forty pages (illustrations optional)
Stories should be typed in readable 14 point font
Stories should be bound or displayed in a presentation binder/folder
Stories should be turned in with entry sheet for judging
Winners will be announced on December 1st, 2008 and prizes will be awarded in each age group. Parents!! Please be fair and let your children do their own work. We should see age appropriate work for each designated age group. Judging will be done according to those criteria so please do not write the stories for your child!

Piano classes and tutoring services provided through this one of a kind program. The classes meet every Monday afternoon from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Tryon Street Recreation Center on 226 Oakland Avenue, Greer, SC 29650. For more information on this program, please contact KAY YOUNG at 542-4246.
Creative Advancement After School Programs:
A unique after school program is being offered through the Greer Recreation Department by Creative Advancement. The program is being offered Monday though Friday 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Victor Park Gym. For more information regarding this program, please contact Dan Dudley at 423-7555.
*PARENT'S NIGHT OUT*
Parents! Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity. It is designed for kids ages 4-12 and runs every third Friday of the month from 6:00pm - 10:00 pm at The Gym @ Vicor Park. The kids will enjoy fun activities, pizza parties, games, arts n' crafts and much more! Registration is $10.00 per child and must be prepaid at least one week in advance! If you do not register in advance, the cost will be $15.00 per child at the door. We will not hold Parent's Night Out if we do not have at least 10 kids pre-registered. If we do not have any registrants, we will not be able to hold the program. The only way we will be able to accept "at the door registrations" is if we have enough pre-registered kids. Space is limited to 30 kids so hurry and sign-up today for the following dates:
